Digital conversion preserves the video and audio that can be read from the original tape; it cannot recreate detail that was never recorded or fully restore information lost through tape damage. Age, repeated playback, heat, humidity, dust, mold, stretched tape, tracking problems, and the original recording equipment can affect the final result.
Tapes with broken shells, loose or tangled tape, visible mold, unusual odor, or severe physical damage require additional evaluation and may not be safe to play. Do not attempt to clean moldy videotape with household products. Tell us about any known damage before the cassette is inserted into playback equipment.
